Over the past few weeks we have been discussing search and rescue in its various forms (IE urban vs wilderness, open field vs snow field, night vs day) and the necessary tools needed to be successful.
The boys have learned the importance of the operation being organized, having someone be in charge, a plan established, and a group willing to be led without freelancing. We have discussed the many forms of communication and when each is appropriate.
This evening the boys had to opportunity to put these lessons to practice when the Cub Scout Pack joined us for a night of search and rescue application. Much to the Cubs dismay (ya right) they got to be the "lost boys" while the Crew made up the "would be" rescuers. With three scenarios, each getting harder than the last, boys had to opportunity to lead the search and to be searchers. They saw first hand the importance of strong leadership as well as a group willing to be led and to follow directions. In the end, all Cubs were found so it must have been a success!
We will be practicing these skills on an on-going basis during outings and camp outs.
